The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
